Blogging after midnight

If you're going to have chili for supper, you probably shouldn't go out right away and do something active/sweaty like mow your lawn. Once you've lost all that water, chocolate poundcake isn't your best choice for dessert, either.
I'm just saying...

My "lovely" lawn

Surprise! Tonight there will be NO bitching about the verdant expanse that is my yard. It poured here this morning, so everything is well watered and basking in h-u-m-i-d-i-t-y, lovely tropical greenhouse-like steaminess.
My toes are again a cheerful green. The sweat is drying nicely, thank you.
In a few minutes, my face will be less red, too. The shower will feel mah-h-h-velous...lol

Too bad I left the camera at work, because there are lotsa new marvels out there, like the tiny mushrooms on the wood under the edge of the ferns; my second crop of irises are blooming (shades of blue with a little yellow in each blossom); there's a bush-like plant that I got from a neighbor that's blooming too--pink pointy clusters of flowers on top; and oh man, the lupines are starting! They're lavendar-y buds that open to blue, and elegant leaves that are stunning with drops of water on them (no trouble there lately!) The flowers I planted on Sunday are all happy and look fine 'cuz the weeds haven't had time to grow, yet.

Tomorrow: A picture of pink peonies in bloom!

Promise!

Ahh, sittin' by the fan...

Sometimes things happen in a magical way:
Today is a "swift moving clouds" day, so I was able to wait for shade to plant. There was even a little breeze, so I only sweat the normal amount (dripping off my nose and blinding me).
As I stuffed the last baby plant in it's hole, it began to rain a sweet 'new plants' rain.
And, since then, it's done the rain/sunshine cycle TWICE more....lol

BTW, the plants that were already in the flowerbed are three patches of dragon's blood sedum, a few phlox plants, and a second year peony that I think is white. Or red.
(No doubt I'll post a picture...lol)

Ok, here it is, random plant-placing and all.
Oh, and only the new blossoms on the nicotana are green. The label does say "white"--in my NEXT life, I'll pay attention to details, ok?

More magic! These are growing on the south side of the square, right above "2005" in the first picture...cool, huh?

The joy of gardening

....is NOT what you think, for me anyway.

Here's the flowerbed I need to plant today. I went to the little greenhouse at my FavStore and bought the flowers for it--light green nicotana, and two shades of purple petunias. I had purple heilotrope in my hand, and set it back down when I saw the marigolds...damn..I can't resist marigolds. Arrgghh. Did I stick to nice yellow ones? Nope. Yellow, orange, red and gold--to really mess up my "color scheme".
SOMEDAY I'll be able to steel myself and stick to a theme, but until then...lol
(The round flowerbed in the background is FULL of red glads, which will mess with any color scheme anyway).
So, what am I waiting for?
It's blasphemy to my sun-loving friends, but I'm waiting for the clouds. It's WAY too sunny right now...lol...really.

The JOY of gardening for me is getting it done so I can sit by the fan!

Potential

What's important to me

Ok, say you saw this picture in a magazine, you might think, "Someone washed her gardening gloves and bothered to take a picture of 'em??"

Then you might think, "Well, they must get used alot--they certainly aren't clean...", and you'd probably turn the page.

But if, on the next page, you saw this picture, you might think, "Wow, it must have been a SLOW news month--who cares about a row of gloves??" lol

Still, you could make some assumptions about this gardener, couldn't you:
--She gardens alot...see the background?
--She wants to protect her hands, I guess.
--But it could be last years' dirt.
--Maybe she doesn't bother to wash those gloves very often.
--Maybe that's why she has so many?
--The flowerbeds behind the gloves could just be perennials...and she took the picture 'cuz they happen to be neat looking right this minute.
--Maybe she leaves gardening gloves on the line ALL summer?
--Well, she may have finally planted those glads, and realized that all the gloves were dirty and washed 'em. Simple.
("Good grief!" you think, " WHY am I still ON this page??!")

But then, on the next page, you see this and you want to cancel your subscription, probably.

(My first thought is that there's WAY too much slack in that clothesline...but then I see the round thing from Mexico and the birdhouse and the fern-fairy and.....I wonder if this person has travelled? Decorating outside walls is fun, and that stuff looks cool...I'd like to see more, but the next page has an article about aphids...gah!)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
My mother often said, "What will the neighbors think?"
I believe that I don't care what they think, but it's ingrained. Yes, I DO order my life around other people's possible perceptions, because I judge them, too.
Do we all do that? Is it something human that makes us toe the mark?
OR, in fact, do other people even notice the things we think they'll notice?
What is it about me that wonders about my gloves on the washline?
Do other people CARE? LOL....do YOU??

No conclusions here.
It's a rainy Saturday in prime gardening season in Minnesota, and I'm wishing I had my bedding plants bought and IN already...lol

An-ti-cip-pay-aa-shun!

Your patience is a wonderful thing.
There you were, ALLLLLL day, waiting to see the department without stuff.
At the crack of dawn, 12 whole hours ago, I set up the NEED in you to watch this space...prompting you to use your imagination:
"I bet the space is really much smaller than it looks..."
"Do the green stripes REALLY run through under those amazing displays?"
"Wonder what it looks like without a thousand balloons?"
"Will there be a new display at the front---featuring a bride maybe?"
"Will Birdie find time to make a few stunning bouquets, if there is a bride?"

Ahhh, see why I keep you around? You ask all the right questions, just when I need to establish a point for this post!

OK, you've earned it...here's the floral department at 6:30 this morning:

It's a grocery store remember, so product was in shopping carts ALL over the rest of the store. It took one helluva lotta walking just to retrieve them.

Here's the view from the other end of the department once we got it re-set. Blinding floor, huh?

You were RIGHT about the wedding theme!
(The story behind the dress is pretty interesting:
The store has a dry-cleaning service, and a bride brought her dress in to be cleaned, but then she heard how much it would cost. She told them to keep the dress, that she wasn't about to spend the additional money! Sooo, we got a dress for our wedding theme...lol)

Here's a close-up of the "mum sale" contest D is entering.
Nope, the correlation escapes me, too...lol...but if you click the picture, you'll see the silk wedding bouquets I DID have time to make today.
The large white and green one on the right was intended for the 'bride' to hold, but it would have landed her bodice-first in those mums.

And before you ask---YES, grapes.

BTW, thanks for waiting!

It's been awhile...

...since I needed to get up at 5AM. Yawn! It's not dawn, but not still dark either. There are crazy birds yammering all around the house--how do I normally sleep through all this?

One of the joys of working in a grocery store is their anal-ness about clean floors. Twice a year, we need to move EVERYTHING out of the floral department so the floors can be stripped and waxed.
I need to be there at 6:30 today to help put it back together...Oh, MAN.

Julie from Human Flower Project e-mailed this morning (well, last night, actually...lol) to say she's posted my article about being a florist... http://www.humanflowerproject.com/index.php/weblog/birdie/
...Isn't that COOL?
(It's fun and humbling to see how someone else 'reads' me).
Cruise around her site while you're there. It's an interesting take on anything about flowers from all over the world. Amazing stuff!
Thanks, Julie!

Alright...the coffee's ready. See you tonight!

Another gift

Mog was shopping yesterday and these were on sale for $1.99 each, so she bought three for herself, and three for ME!

(Maybe August will be "Glad" month on EF, ok? lol)

A brown paper wrapper?

I have a friend who lives in one of the Southern States...one of the "Battles-of-the-Civil-War" states. Like a Tom Robbins novel in the Religion section, he's a liberal among ultra-conservatives.
Things are fine as long as he doesn't discuss politics or religion with his neighbors or pretty much anyone else...as long as he doesn't say who he is...can you imagine that here in Minnesota?

Me either.

(When we discuss current events, it's unsatisfying because we so thoroughly agree. lol )
I dearly want him to subscribe to The New Yorker so that he and his wife wouldn't feel so alone, but.....it would come in the mail and the post office people would SEE it. Yikes.
Mine never comes in brown paper either.

Here's a taste: http://www.newyorker.com/

Blogging like a Florist--#3

LOL...is this schtick getting old, or are you just getting used to it?
Nevermind.....here's how to make

A wreath for the flowergirl's head

We're doing a wedding this weekend in purples and hot pinks. There are three flowergirls, ages 4, 5, and 6. They're carrying baskets of theme flowers, and we're combining silk hydrangea with fresh flowers, because fresh hydrangea wilts like crazy.
Today, I made three crowns for them to wear...using silk hydrangea, baronia and viburnum, with fresh blue limonium.
Wanna see?? lol

Most heads are 22-23" around, so a piece of 18" (#22 gauge) wire isn't long enough. Here are my three overlapped wires (in green tape) and sample wires to show you how about how much to overlap 'em.

Starting at one end, I alternated limonium, hydrangea, limonium, baronia, limonium, viburnum...wash, rinse, repeat.

Make sure you don't leave too much space between additions, as the curved shape later will emphasize spaces.

Before you know it, you'll have 15" taped...by then, the finished end of the wire will be wobbly when you twist it to tape it. I couldn't take a picture of this part...lol...so I'll have to describe the process, ok?
Cut a few 6" chunks of tape and have them handy. Now, lean over and tape the additions on by swinging the finished end downward in the air...get it?
You know the hand motion when you make circles with a sparkler? Imagine the finished end is the sparkler--a damn BIG sparkler--so it would revolve as you made circles in the air, right?
SO: one hand 'revolves' and the other tapes.
Piece'o'cake...!

Here's how to tie it off: Make sure there's no empty space there unless you want a fluffy bow to finish it......

This is the under-side view.
(I'm using eighth inch satin ribbon with streamers, so I'm not leaving any space for it. It'll tuck in right over the junction there...see?) Tie the bow on, and you're FINISHED!

Awww....three sweet little crowns!

CUTE, huh?

Question:

What's on your desktop?

Here's the picture I have on mine...

www.heligan.co.uk/.../ page7_lant_large.html
She's called "Mudmaid" and she's in a garden in England. I think she's stunning, don't you?

I can stop whining any time....

Ok, the Most Senseless American Task is done for another week here. Tomorrow I should be fairly amiable.

Still, I just KNOW you'll want to see this: (Ah, Vera? I did get them polished for the wedding after all...your advice was sound. Thanks.Happy)

The green is a charming and subtle color contrast on pure white feet, don't you think? Argh.
(What's left of the silver-slipper-blisters can be seen still on the second toes...lol)

Just think, by summers end you could know every inch of my yard...lol

A 'good' homeowner would be out mowing right now...

LOL...oh WELL!

It was actually sunny this morning for the VA Memorial Day Band Concert and Salute to Veterans. The ceremony is always touching because there have been so many lives lost to the foolishness that is war....but today especially because it's the last time my friend R will be playing this gig.

They're moving to Florida this summer, but he might still be around to play the 4th of July Fireworks Concert (maximum Sousa--Oooo, I'm in heaven! lol)
(He's the one with the black cap, second from the left).

After the concert, I joined the traffic on 94 to Minneapolis, to finalize the flower plan for E ans S's wedding in late July. Brats on the grill and talk about flowers, outside on a lovely day. My life is GOOD.
Here's the happy couple in their garden out back...
(yes, their lawn IS mowed).

Sweet, huh?

I'm not used to dealing with wedding flowers that won't be out of water all day. The ceremony is at 7 PM Saturday, followed by dinner and dancing.
I won't NEED to take that Friday off, but I will anyway....lol

OK, one more picture:

And yes, she's just as beautiful inside, too.
My sweet Em.

Graduation anxiety

Ah, Spring. Time for rites of passage, like graduations.
And, the Adult corollary:
"What can I possibly get that kid for a graduation present???!!!"

I always want it to be something significant, something that connects us somehow, ya know? Something only I can give, ideally, but I'll even stoop to tired in-jokes....lol...just so it's memorable.
(Can you tell I have a graduation party to go to tonight?)

This particular kid and I have a few goofy Christmases in common, an association through his parents, an interview about being a florist, and not alot of contact otherwise. (What teenager wants to hang with his parent's friends?)
He's quiet around me, unless he's drumming...lol

So, I think about what gifts I've received that were cool or lasting or memorable...what did I get for MY graduation?
LOL...we're talking 1967 now, remember.
Mom and Dad gave me a "17 jewel Bulova" that I lost within 2 months...and of course cards with money, which I spent within ONE month. THE only other thing I remember is a huge beach towel from Aunt Rosie and Uncle Eddie. I used it often and wrapped my kids in it after baths years later, and thought about them fondly every time.

In 1967, a beach towel was cool, even if it was a terry-cloth American flag.
In 2005.......?
Nope.
I bought the kid a keyboard for his college computer.
So much for significance, huh?
Computing

LWT

Remember the Millstream Creek pictures from the last time we did the Lake Wobegone Trail? Today, (in the cold) we were out biking/running on the trail, and we heard splashing from a 'tide pool' kind of pond next to the stream. We figured it was formed when the whole marsh had more water in it. Now, it seemed to be cut-off from the flowing water nearby.

The splashing was from several large fish--were they doing a fishy love dance? Just frolicking? Or, had they finally figured out that they were STUCK in a small fairly shallow pond with no outlet?

Fishy panic?

Click the pictures...I think this one shows some actual fins!

Hey, wanna go fishing? lol

Minutia

You've probably seen the link to that grocery list blog, where some guy finds and saves discarded grocery lists and publishes them on his blog, right?

This morning, I need to go to my FavStore, and my list starts with kitty litter and chocolate chips.

Yeah, that's what I thought, too.

I didn't know....

If you return the empty ink cartridges from your printer to Office Max, you get a free ream of printer paper.

Not bad, huh?

Still, almost everything you buy at Office Max has a mail-in rebate offer attached. I hate that. This time, $66 worth of cartridges got me a mail-in offer of a HP Celebrations Pack...Whoopee.
WHAT exactly is it?
A 20 page party and project booklet...so I can have a party "right from my HP printer", and how exciting is THAT, hmm??
I can hardly resist.

For a blog with a small but loyal following, "one comment doth encouragement make"...
Lets hope you haven't created a monster, here...lol

How to arrange flowers

Have you noticed that if someone is dressed professionally, we believe they ARE? (White lab coat and stethoscope; dark blue uniform with badge; the SUIT, carrying a briefcase...lol, see?)

And, we give people behind the counter skills and abilities that aren't necessarily better than yours.
(Well, yeah, the burgandy smock does imply amazing things...
photo hosting and image hosting by ImageVenue.com
but that's just me...lol)

What I'm getting at here is: Just because I'M a professional florist doesn't mean that YOU can't arrange flowers.
HONEST!

There are some very simple maxims here.
1. Place the blossoms above the greens.
2. Have enough flowers to fill the vase.
3. Start with the tallest flower and work down.
4. Don't be afraid of color.
5. When you're relatively happy with the thing, walk away. Leave it...and go mow the lawn, or clip your toenails, or read a blog.
When you come back, you'll glance at the flowers you've arranged as though somebody else arranged them. YOU WILL LOVE the look...trust me.

Piece'o'cake, right?

Wow!

We here in Minnesota have been having a tough spring this year. In the past 3-4 weeks, there have been TWO sunny days, just enough to keep us optimistic about the chances for tomorrow, ya know?
Today we had a series of fast-moving thunder-and-lightening storms with intermittent sunshine. What a TEASE.

Here's the sky about 10 minutes ago from my back yard.

The perfect backdrop for a rainbow, right?

Oh, well. I'll wait another 10 minutes.

See?!??
